For a day at least, the best division with the best two quarterbacks

NFL week 1 scores: Live analysis, schedule, injury updates, news, highlights from Sunday's games (14)

Teams in the NFC West were prolific Sunday, going 4-0 in three different time zones. Kyler Murray and the Cardinals epitomized the ideal of a Kliff Kingsbury offense by dominating the AFC South favorite Titans, with Murray accounting for five touchdowns passing or rushing. And defensive end Chandler Jones had a Week 1-record five sacks.

But there were two performances that were as much or more historically significant: Seahawks QB Russell Wilson's outing against Indianapolis ranks as the sixth-best Week 1 passer rating since 2000 at 156.1. And then Rams QB Matthew Stafford topped it, hitting 156.3 against the Bears on Sunday night for the fifth-best Week 1 mark. These weren't dink and dunk passes, either: Wilson's 11.04 yards per attempt is the 19th-longest average in a Week 1 game since 2000, and Stafford's 12.35 ranks 10th.

Matthew Stafford shines in L.A. debut

NFL week 1 scores: Live analysis, schedule, injury updates, news, highlights from Sunday's games (28)

Bears rookie Justin Fields scored his first touchdown, but it was new Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford in the spotlight Sunday as Los Angeles began the season with a 34-14 rout of Chicago on Sunday.

Stafford, who joined the Rams from the Lions in a trade for Jared Goff this offseason, threw touchdown passes of 67 and 56 yards to Van Jefferson and Cooper Kupp, respectively, as Los Angeles built its lead. He finished 20-of-26 for 321 yards and three touchdowns — good for a 156.1 QB rating, the best of any quarterback in Week 1, and the best in a single game in his 12-year career.

NFL week 1 scores: Live analysis, schedule, injury updates, news, highlights from Sunday's games (33)

The Bears are 0-1 for the third time in four seasons under Matt Nagy and seventh time in the past eight seasons.

The defense gave up an alarming number of big plays to the Rams. The offense had its moments but, as we’ve seen before, couldn’t find the end zone. The big story? The five Justin Fields snaps. What’s it mean, and how will that change going forward?

NFL week 1 scores: Live analysis, schedule, injury updates, news, highlights from Sunday's games (38)

You saw it once in real time, and a couple of times on replay.

Since then, you’ve probably seen it 100 times on social media: Mac Jones had just thrown his first career NFL touchdown pass — a 7-yarder to Nelson Agholor in the second quarter of Sunday’s season opener between the Patriots and Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium — but now he was getting all squirrelly when his teammates tried to give him a memento of this historic moment.

We see a sideline shot of Agholor trying to hand the football to the rookie quarterback from Alabama.

We see the rookie quarterback from Alabama push that football away as though it had been autographed by the Auburn football team.

It may have seemed funny at the time — and, well, come on, it still is, sort of — but to view it now, in the aftermath of the Patriots’ crushing 17-16 loss to the Dolphins, puts things in brilliant context. For if Jones truly is what everybody in Patriotsland is saying he is, which is that not only is he the starting quarterback but he’s also comfortable being a take-no-prisoners, smash-mouth leader of the New England offense, there’s no way, just no way, he’s going to act like he’s just hit his first Little League home run.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s sharp play pairs well with Trey Lance’s TD in the 49ers’ win over Detroit

NFL week 1 scores: Live analysis, schedule, injury updates, news, highlights from Sunday's games (55)

It all began rather inauspiciously, to say the least.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo couldn’t handle the season’s very first snap from new 49ers center Alex Mack. The Detroit Lions recovered the fumble. Coach Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers offense, under so much scrutiny over the past several months as it’s loaded up and prepared its two-QB attack, trudged straight back to the sideline mere seconds after it had taken the field.

“Just a little too amped up,” Garoppolo said afterward. “It was my fault. I just gotta stay in there a little longer.”

But then, the jitters were gone.

Justin Fields watch continues

Could Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields see more action against the Rams tonight?

Andy Dalton is making sure fans have to wait. He led a nine-play, 55-yard drive ending with David Montgomery's 3-yard touchdown run. It didn't start pretty, but the Bears only trail 13-7 at halftime.

Kravitz: Don't put it on Carson Wentz this time

Back in Philadelphia, Eagles fans will catch a glance at what happened here in Indianapolis Sunday and they will nod their heads: See, this is what you get with Carson Wentz. He’s a sack waiting to happen. Now he’s Indy’s problem, not ours. Good luck with that. Thanks for the draft picks …

Honestly, they might turn out to be right about Wentz, who was sacked a league-high 50 times in 11 ½ games last year. It wasn’t all on the Eagles’ injured and underperforming offensive line — a lot was, but not all of it — with Wentz responsible for an unhealthy percentage of those sacks because he became gun-shy and held onto the ball too long during a disastrous final year in Philly.

Except that’s not what happened Sunday in the Colts’ 28-16 loss to the Seahawks at sold-out Lucas Oil Stadium.

Read all of Bob Kravitz's thoughts below.

Justin Fields' Bears cameo

The last NFL first-round rookie quarterback to make his debut Sunday didn't have to wait long.

The Athletic's Adam Jahns writes: Justin Fields' first NFL snap in the regular season came on 2nd-and-10 from LA's 12. He completed a 9-yard pass to WR Marquise Goodwin. What happened next for the Bears? False start, timeout and then Andy Dalton gets picked off in the end zone. Just play the kid or don't, right?

The inevitability of the Kansas City Chiefs

The Browns-Chiefs game today was a reminder of what teams that want to challenge the Chiefs face. Everything can go right, you can be winning for 3+ quarters, but it only takes one mistake for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to capitalize. Chiefs didn't exactly look terrifying, but they're going to be able to come through in these type of close games.
